To promote the giveaway, the Blackhawks collaborated with Chicago Fire FC to have German professional soccer legend Bastian Schweinsteiger pose with the jersey, and all-star Blackhawks forward Alex DeBrincat wore the kit during the team's pregame warmup of "sewer ball" (also known as two-touch). A sweepstakes was also conducted on the team's official Twitter account to reward followers who were unable to attend the game.
Soccer-Style Retro Jersey Giveaway
The Chicago Blackhawks celebrated the beautiful game and their own rich history with a soccer-style retro jersey giveaway on Oct. 28, 2018, against the Edmonton Oilers. The first 5,000 fans to enter the United Center received this limited release. Blackhawks Creative reimagined the Blackhawks sweater of the 1930s into a soccer jersey, incorporating the black and white chest stripes from the original sweater. The original hand-drawn logo also appeared on the jersey in the style of a soccer badge, accompanied by a gold star above to signify the club's first championship in 1934. The jerseys are “sponsored” by McLaughlin’s Manor House Coffee, the coffee empire of Blackhawks original owner Frederic McLaughlin.
